Here is the interview:
Q: It’s my pleasure to meet with you today, and I’d like to start by getting to know you a little better. Can you share some insights about yourself, and we can take it from there?
A: Certainly, I’m a lawyer with over 40 years of experience in the legal profession. I specialize in dispute resolution, which primarily involves litigation and trial work in the business sector. This covers a wide range of business disputes, such as those related to intellectual property, white-collar crimes, antitrust and competition issues, and investment treaty arbitration. In 1986, I founded our law firm, Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, in Los Angeles. At that time, we had just four lawyers. Today, we’ve grown significantly and expanded our presence to 35 offices worldwide, with over 1,100 lawyers.
Q: That’s an impressive journey, Mr. Quinn. Let’s delve into some of the recent developments at Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan. You mentioned the opening of a new office in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Could you tell us more about this expansion and its significance?
A: Absolutely. We’re thrilled to announce the opening of our new office in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. While we’ve been serving clients in this region for many years, the tremendous economic activities in the area have led us to establish a permanent physical presence. Dubai and Abu Dhabi have become critical hubs for the global business community. As dispute resolution lawyers, our goal is to contribute to the resolution of legal matters and disputes in this region effectively.
Q: Thank you for sharing that perspective. Could you elaborate on the firm’s goals and focus with the new office in Dubai?
A: Our decision to open an office in Dubai is driven by the dynamic nature of the region. With its diverse and burgeoning economic activities, Dubai and the entire UAE are becoming focal points for the global business community. We want to be part of this growth, not only by resolving disputes in the region but also by contributing to the growing number of outbound disputes. This includes cases involving UAE investors in international projects, which may lead to disputes worked out here or in other global financial centers. We aim to be at the forefront of providing effective legal solutions in this thriving region.
Q: It’s an exciting step for the firm. Now, moving on to your experiences, you’ve worked on a wide range of cases throughout your career. Can you share some of the challenges you’ve faced and perhaps some of the proudest accomplishments?
A: Of course, Throughout my career, I’ve encountered numerous challenges, but one of the most significant highlights is our involvement in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis. We played a crucial role in pursuing claims against Wall Street firms regarding subprime mortgages and successfully recovered over $50 billion. Additionally, we represented the United States government, recovering approximately $22 billion from the world’s largest banks. These cases were exceptionally complex and required innovative legal strategies.
“In those years, we were fortunate to work alongside the tech giant Google. Our role was to represent Android phone manufacturers during what’s commonly known as the ‘smartphone wars.’ These were intense legal battles, primarily initiated by Apple, a prominent player in the tech industry. At the heart of these disputes were intricate issues related to intellectual property and patent disputes concerning smartphone technologies and designs.
Apple contended that certain features and design elements of their iPhones were being imitated or infringed upon by competitors, particularly those manufacturing Android-based phones. This resulted in a series of multifaceted legal confrontations. Apple aimed to safeguard its intellectual property and patents, while our task, on behalf of Android phone manufacturers, was to defend them against these claims.
Our law firm, Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, played a pivotal role in representing Android phone manufacturers in these high-stakes disputes. Our involvement encompassed a broad spectrum of legal dimensions, including intellectual property law, patent law, and the development of effective litigation strategies. We were committed to demonstrating that our clients’ products did not infringe on Apple’s intellectual property rights.
The outcomes of these cases held profound significance, not only for our clients but also for the wider tech industry. The ‘smartphone wars’ cases had a substantial impact, often setting legal precedents and influencing the competitive dynamics of the technology market. Our dedication and expertise helped secure favorable results for our clients, ultimately shaping the landscape of the smartphone industry. These cases exemplify our firm’s ability to handle complex, high-stakes legal matters in the technology sector.”
We also represented Elon Musk in several litigations, including the case in which he was sued for securities fraud for allegedly Tweeting that he had “funding secured” to take Tesla private. We won that case before a jury in San Fransisco.
Q: Impressive achievements, indeed. With your extensive experience, you’ve likely witnessed changes in the legal industry. Could you share some insights into how the legal landscape has evolved during your career?
A: Certainly, the legal industry has seen significant changes over the years. One notable shift is the increasing complexity of disputes, which often span multiple jurisdictions. For instance, we might represent a Swiss bank facing issues in Taiwan with alleged wrongdoers in Singapore. This globalized nature of disputes has compelled us to establish offices across the world to better serve our clients. It’s essential to have qualified lawyers in different regions and be able to navigate the intricacies of cross-border disputes.
Q: What about the future?
A: As Quinn Emanuel continues to grow and take on more intricate cases, we intend to remain an important presence in the legal world. Our unwavering commitment to winning the best possible results for our clients, innovative legal strategies, and the diverse talents of our trial lawyers ensure that we continue to excel in the courtroom.
Q: What is your advice for aspiring junior lawyers?
A: The legal profession is challenging and requires dedication and hard work. A lawyer must be prepared to put in the time and effort necessary to achieve the best outcomes for clients. Seek out mentors, learn from experienced lawyers, and take opportunities to gain hands-on experience. Volunteering and actively pursuing opportunities can lead to a successful career.
Q: It sounds like Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan is well-positioned for the future. We appreciate your time and insights, Mr. Quinn. Your firm’s dedication to litigation and innovation in the legal field is truly remarkable.
A: Thank you. It’s been a pleasure discussing these important developments and experiences with you. We’re excited about the future and look forward to contributing to the UAE’s ever-expanding business and legal community. This region has visionary leadership and dynamic opportunities. We aim to be a part of the growing importance of the UAE and the broader Middle East on the global stage.
