Lufthansa Group Expands Green Fares to Long-Haul Routes, Offering More Sustainable Flying Worldwide

Dubai, UAE – 04 December 2024: The Lufthansa Group is taking a significant step in making air travel more sustainable with the global expansion of its Green Fares tariff. Starting December 4, 2024, passengers can now book Green Fares on over 850,000 flights across the Lufthansa Group’s network, including long-haul routes. These fares include CO2 offsetting through the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and a contribution to high-quality climate protection projects, making flying more eco-friendly.

Having launched Green Fares for short- and medium-haul flights two years ago, the Lufthansa Group now extends the successful initiative to its intercontinental routes following a positive test phase. Over 2 million passengers have already chosen Green Fares, offsetting nearly 190,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions, which is equivalent to the emissions of over 1,300 flights between Munich and New York with an Airbus A350.

Dieter Vranckx, Chief Commercial Officer of the Lufthansa Group, stated: “We have set ambitious goals to make flying more sustainable, investing billions of euros in new aircraft and technologies. Green Fares allow us to actively involve our customers in contributing to sustainable aviation, marking a major step not just for Lufthansa but for the entire industry.”

The Green Fares tariff offers a simple, effective solution for sustainable travel. For European and North African routes, 20% of CO2 emissions are offset through SAF, with the remaining 80% offset by climate projects. For long-haul flights, 10% of CO2 emissions are reduced via SAF, and 90% is offset by contributions to climate protection initiatives. The fare also offers additional miles and points, as well as the flexibility to rebook for free.

The Green Fares are available on flights operated by Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, SWISS, Edelweiss, Discover Airlines, and Air Dolomiti, with some exceptions. Eurowings offers a similar sustainability option called PlanetBlu.

With the global expansion of Green Fares, the Lufthansa Group is setting a new standard in aviation, offering passengers an opportunity to contribute to a greener future while traveling the world. The airline group continues to expand its sustainable offerings, with approximately 4% of its passengers already opting for CO2 offsetting options available during or after the booking process.
