Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 28 November 2024: Heriot-Watt University has launched its first fully online master’s degree in Computer Science, delivered in collaboration with Coursera, the world’s leading online learning platform with 150 million registered users. Heriot-Watt is the first UK university to offer an MSc in this field on Coursera.
This programme addresses the growing global demand for tech skills, with computer science expertise required in 18% of job postings worldwide, yet only found in 3% of candidate profiles, according to Lightcast. Applications are now open, with the programme set to begin in May 2025. The comprehensive curriculum covers key areas such as programming, machine learning, data mining, data structures, and artificial intelligence, while students will also earn an industry certificate from tech leaders like Google, IBM, and Meta.
Professor Sara Lombardo, Executive Dean of the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences at Heriot-Watt, emphasized the university’s pioneering approach to tech education, with a legacy of innovation in computer science and AI. “This programme combines our academic expertise with industry credentials, providing students with the skills needed to capitalize on the growing demand for computer scientists,” she said.
The online format offers flexibility, allowing students to study at their own pace while continuing their careers. The programme is designed to meet the needs of working professionals and offers performance-based admissions, enabling learners without formal ICT backgrounds to pursue careers in fields such as software development, data science, and IT management.
Dr. Abrar Ullah, Programme Director, highlighted the programme’s flexibility in both time management and curriculum design. “Our goal is to empower professionals to achieve their career aspirations,” he said.
Russell Brooks, CEO of Heriot-Watt Online, noted the university’s long-standing expertise in flexible education. “This MSc offers a career-focused degree at an affordable price, complemented by an industry microcredential.”
Coursera, founded in 2012, partners with over 325 top universities and organizations, providing access to world-class learning to 150 million learners worldwide. Marni Baker Stein, Chief Content Officer at Coursera, added that the partnership with Heriot-Watt enables students worldwide to access an industry-aligned curriculum that fits their professional goals.
