UAE Paves the Way for Inclusive Tourism, Aiming to Become the World’s Most Accessible Destination for People with Disabilities

Dubai, UAE, January 11, 2024 – The United Arab Emirates is setting its sights on becoming the world’s leader in accessible tourism, with a strong commitment to welcoming and accommodating travelers with disabilities. This ambition was on full display at the 4th Accessible Travel and Tourism International Conference, which kicked off today in Dubai under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum.

“The UAE is a pioneering country where people of determination receive special priority,” declared His Highness Sheikh Ahmed, Chairman of Dubai Airports and Emirates Airline Group. “We are on the path to becoming the best destination in the world for tourism services, and I call for concerted international efforts to ensure the provision of accessible tourism for more than a billion people around the world.”

The conference, held at the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel, brought together decision-makers, experts, and stakeholders from across the globe to discuss and innovate in making cities and travel experiences truly inclusive for people with disabilities. The theme, “Let’s make all cities friendly to tourists of special needs,” highlighted the need for comprehensive accessibility across air, land, and sea transport, as well as accommodation, hospitality, and communication services.

With an estimated 50 million people of determination living in the Middle East alone, the potential for accessible tourism is vast. Recognizing this untapped market, the UAE is taking concrete steps to remove barriers and provide seamless experiences. This includes initiatives like the Dubai Universal Building Code, which mandates accessibility standards for the built environment.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) furthered the conversation by holding a workshop on mobility assistance. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by travelers with disabilities in air travel, IATA is dedicated to finding sustainable solutions for a more inclusive experience.

“Travelers with disabilities may need help navigating busy airports, have difficulty with stairs, or be visually impaired,” explained Linda Ristagno, IATA Assistant Director for External Affairs. “The workshop aims to address these issues by finding sustainable solutions to meet the diverse needs of travelers.”

Accessible Travel and Tourism International Conference serves as a platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration. With participation from renowned organizations like dnata, Istanbul Airport, British Airways, and PRM assist, the conference fosters a global ecosystem dedicated to making travel accessible for all.

“Inclusive tourism is an amazing area to invest in,” stated His Royal Highness Prince Mired Raad bin Zeid Al-Hussein, President of the Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Jordan. “This segment of travelers is tech-savvy and eager to explore the world. Businesses that cater to their needs stand to benefit greatly.”

By embracing the principles of accessibility and inclusivity, the UAE is poised to become a leading destination for travelers with disabilities. The 4th Accessible Travel and Tourism International Conference serves as a testament to this commitment, paving the way for a future where travel is truly open to everyone.
