The British University in Dubai (BUiD) 17th graduation ceremony sees the 1st cohort of undergraduates
16 December 2022, Dubai, UAE: Under the Chancellorship of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, and CEO and Chairman of the Emirates Group, The British University in Dubai (BUiD) celebrated the graduation of its seventeenth cohort of graduates at the Cultural and Scientific Association. The ceremony was attended by the University’s Council members, academic and administrative staff, and family and friends of the graduates.
For the last 16 years BUiD has celebrated the graduation of its students at the doctoral and Masters levels. This year BUiD will be celebrating the first cohort of undergraduates from two programmes, Business Management and Computer Science – Artificial Intelligence, as BUiD was the first University to offer Artificial Intelligence specialisation in the UAE.
The University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Abdullah Alshamsi, welcomed the graduates, their families, and guests. He said, “This graduation ceremony is a special one for the university. Not only we are celebrating our first undergraduate cohort but we are also celebrating 20 years of achievements. The University was established by a Law signed by late Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al-Maktoum in 2003. BUiD has since grew contributed in its own way to the fulfilment of the vision of the UAE as endorsed by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al-Nhayan, the President of the UAE, and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, Ruler of the Emirate of Dubai.”
Hurmat Ansari, BSc in Computer Science, spoke about her study experience and said, “I am honoured to be standing on this stage as a graduate among so many accomplished individuals. Today marks a significant milestone in our lives. I would like to address a special thanks to us, the undergraduates who took a chance in 2018 on The British University in Dubai and in so doing became the first undergraduate cohort of the University. BUiD was the first university in the UAE which offers an accredited undergraduate degree in Artificial Intelligence. My trust proved true. In my four years as an undergrad, I managed to go to the UK for the first time, met some of my best friends, and had opportunities that I never would have even imagined.”
Dr Aljazzey AlEid, PhD in Project Management, spoke on behalf of the postgraduates and congratulated them on their achievements and success.

The founders of the University are the Al Maktoum Foundation, the Dubai Development and Investment Authority (now Dubai Holding), Rolls-Royce, the British Business Group, and the National Bank of Dubai (now Emirates NBD). The University is governed by a Council under the chancellorship of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum.
BUiD works in collaboration with leading organisations and institutions including its major contributing partner the Knowledge Fund Establishment, Atkins, the UAE Ministry of Education, and government and associated bodies across the UAE’s public and private sectors.
